India's bio-diversity, forest and wildlife heritage is undergoing rapid destruction and impoverishment due to unsustainable commercial, industrial, "developmental", and local pressures. Alarmed by the above dangers and also by wide scale poaching of animals and depleting forest covers, I took the study of wildlife conservation in India on my own. To know about the efforts, I visited some of the national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, voluntary organizations and government offices. There are many organizations like Wildlife trust of India, wildlife conservation society that are working towards conserving wildlife. But it is not that only non-government organisations are working in this field. The Indian government has shared the burden. The natural projects and programmes started by the Indian government such as Project Tiger, Nature Camps and Jungle Lodges have been organised to promote wildlife awareness among the people. These projects not only help in preserving our natural heritage but also encourage eco-tourism. |
