As I leafed through the pages of various books on the wildlife in India. I came to know that India has different flora and fauna in different regions. The vegetation of Himalayas is different from that of plains and vegetation of northern region is different from south and west. Such a huge variation in flora enables the sustenance of various species that feed on the vegetation. The massive country is divided into four relatively well defined regions - the Himalayan mountains, the Gangetic river plains, the southern (Deccan) plateau, and the islands of Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar.Chilka Lake (Orissa) and Keoladeo National Park (Bharatpur) - have been designated under the Convention of Wetlands. The himalayan foothills are covered with tropical forests. The dominant species is sal. The area is characterized by tall grassy meadows. The elephant, sambar, swamp deer, cheetel, hog deer, barking deer, wild boar, tiger, panther, wild dog, black and sloth bear are found in this area. Hyena, and jackal are scavengers. The great Indian one horned rhinoceros, which is considered a rare species is found in Assam. The animals found in the high altitude region are wild ass, wild goats, sheep and yak. The species of wild goat are thar, markhor and ibex. The vegetation of Eastern Himalayan region includes pine, fir, yew, rhododendron dwarf, bamboo and moss and fem. The typical species of the zone characterized by Indo-Chinese fauna are red pandas, badgers, porcupines, etc. The goats found in this area are serow goral and takin. |
