While exploring wildlife in India we also wanted to have glimpses of Indian culture in its undiluted form. So we decided to explore the jungles of Southern India. What we saw in South India is that the region not only has coastal attractions but also has lush green sceneries, which enclose wildlife sanctuaries that are wider than life. We explored Periyar in Kerala, Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu, Bandipur & Nagarhole in Bangalore and Pulicat in Andhra Pradesh. There are many more parks & sanctuaries in southern India that we couldn't explore. Though the number of parks we visited gave us a fair idea of the wildlife in Southern India but still I feel that we have not seen enough. Periyar Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala is the veritable paradise for all wildlife lovers. Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu In the 321-sq-kms Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary we found elephants, tigers, leopards, dhole panther, sloth bear, python, barking deer, Jackal, and many more wild animals Bandipur & Nagarhole National Parks, Karnataka Two of the most attractive national parks of Karnataka are Nagarhole and Bandipur. Even if separate entities, they are a part of a large neighboring wildlife reserve that also includes Madumalai Sanctuary of Tamil Nadu and Wynad Reserve of Kerala. Pulicat Wildlife Sanctuary, Andhra Pulicat was our last discovery. It is famous as the second largest brackish water lagoon in India along the coast of Bay Bengal. We had a good time watching a variety of aquatic and terrestrial birds. Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, and Silent Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala, Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka, Srisailam Sanctuary in Andhra Pradesh are other popular sanctuaries in Southern India. |
