India has always fascinated me. There is an innate desire to know about this intriguing land. Whether it is religions of India, spirituality, tourist places or some other thing, India has hit my consciousness. Recently, two of us got a chance to visit India to study wildlife of India. The trip was sponsored by the company for which we work as it wanted first-hand information of animal wealth of India. As part of our research, we visited zoos, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and also to some institutes to gather secondary data. From our efforts we came to know that India possesses a huge variety of animals. The country owes its rich collection of animals to the geographical diversity that it enjoys. There are diverse environmental conditions that suit different species of animals, both domestic and wild. Cattle were probably the most important animals in India for people. It was interesting to know that chickens reached India from Thailand or China about 2500 BC, and have been common in India since that time. Sheep and goats arrived from West Asia probably about the same time. Camels were there but these were popularized for the common usage after the Islamic invasions. The jungles of India have sustained a large variety of wild animals. The share of Jungles is constantly decreasing and this has put the existence of wild animals in danger but still there is a hope as many organizations have taken the onus of spreading awareness about protecting the wild species. The rich fauna of India includes rhinos, elephants, tigers, cranes, black bucks, lions, peacocks, cobra, white Bengal tiger, peacocks etc. I was completely bowled over by the majestic Indian Tiger. Personally, I feel anybody can fall in love with the dignified tiger of India. |
