One of the major monument that I explored during my visit to West Bengal was Victoria Memorial. It was 4:30 PM in the evening when my cousin, Natalie, asked me " Hey! lets go to Victoria". Though I was not in mood to actually explore this tourist spot but the force with which my cousin pursued, I just couldn't say no to her. I vividly remember by 5 PM, we were in front of Victoria Memorial. We took a bus from our place and it took us 20 minutes to reach the monument - the piece of history. As soon I came face to face with the monument, I realized the beauty of the monument is not in its architecture, it has a mystical power... some power that instantly conquers the mind of the travellers. I was totally enticed and awestruck as the monument gave a larger than life look. Great British! I thought. Made in commemoration of Queen Victoria, this edifice is splendid example of British architecture. Inaugurated by Prince of Wales in 1921, Victoria Memorial carries the legacies of the bygone era. Situated at the Southern end of Calcutta's Maidan continues to be the city's pride and joy. The significant thing about the Victoria Memorial is that it was constructed in White Marble. Its architectural details had a strong influence of the English civic baroque architecture of the period, particularly the Belfast City. Exploring every nook and corner of Victoria was a pleasure. The stately bronze statue of the queen near the entrance, the brass canons, wrought iron street lamps all added much glamor to this enticing monument. It took us around 1 hour to actually satisfy our eyes and heart. I am easily able to recapitulate the beauty of the Victoria Memorial - a legend constructed in White Marble. |
