After covering the exotic Khajuraho temples, I planned my trip to Ujjain, another enchanting city near the Khajuraho temples. Since it was the first time that I came to India, I took a guide, Pradeep, who helped me out in planning the sightseeing tour of the city. Sir, before actually starting our tour, I would like to tell you the history of Ujjain.Said the guide. He told me that Ujjain is the modern name of Ujjayini. By 6th century B.C, Avnati with it's capital at Ujjaini is mentioned in Buddhist literature as one of the four great powers along with Vats, Kosala and Maghdha. The temple that I visited was Mahakaleshwar temple. Mahakal of Ujjayini is known as the twelve celebrated Jyotirlingas in India. I also visited the Kalidasa academy of Ujjain. This academy was set up in Ujjain by the Government of Madhya Pradesh to immortalise the memory of the great poet dramatist, and to create a multidisciplinary institution to project the genius of the entire classical tradition with Kalidasa as the apex, enable research and study in Sanskrit classical and traditional performing arts, and facilitate its adaptation for contemporary stage in different cultural sittings and language groups. The other places that I explored are Pancheshani Yatra and the Ved Shala observatory. |
