After Madurai, the next destination that I explored was Rameshwaram. Moving from Madurai to Rameshwaram was not at all a problem, since the city is properly linked. Rameshwaram is a well known pilgrimage destination of India as it endorse many temples. Located in the Eastern coast of India, Rameshwaram offer many scenic tourist spots to explore. Bestowed with divine grace, Rameshwaram has beaches, temples and may other tourist spots that makes Rameshwaram worth visiting. Situated on the tip of the Indian peninsula, Rameshwaram is a small island with exotic locales to explore. It is an important South India pilgrimage center of the Indians. It is the place from where Lord Rama had built a bridge across the sea to rescue his consort Sita. This is the place where Rama worshipped Lord Shiva to cleanse away the Ravana sin. Both the Vaishnavites and Shaivites visit this pilgrimage. The Temple of Rameshwaram has it own saga to say. And I consider myself quite fortunate that I happened to visit Rameshwaram Temple. Constructed by different rulers after 12 th century, Rameshwaram Temple is one of the best example of Dravadian architecture. The guide on my tour told that Rameshwaram Temple is known for its corridors and the third corridor is one of the largest corridor of Rameshwaram Temple. Though I don't believe in idol worship but my visit to Rameshwaram inculcated a desire to believe that is non existent. The faith of the people and ceremony performed there was quiet unbelievable and above my imagination. As a part of excursion, my travel agent took me to some of the famous places like Dhanukhodi, Ramanathapuram, Tirupullanai, Erwadi and Karusadai Island. As a major pilgrimage centre, Rameshwaram holds a great significance in Hindu mythology. It is said that in Rameshwaram, Lord Rama gave his thanks to Lord Shiva and performed his Pooja to wash away his sins which he got by killing Demon King, Ravana. In fact, I bought a lot of items in handicrafts that formed great souvenirs to gift to my loved ones. Beaded necklace, splendid silk materials, sea shells made my antique gifts. |
