Kanchipuram, the land of silk sarees, is great pilgrimage destination in India as it endorses few of the finest temples.

When I was in Chennai, I came to know that silk of Kanchipuram is quite famous and that initially attracted me to the city. Kanchipuram is a small rural town about 75 kilometers from Chennai in the state of Tamil nadu. Significantly, It also serves as the district head quarters for the Chengalpattu district.

I resorted to Baboo Soorya Hotel, Kanchipuram, the swankiest hotel in town. The resort is clean and have well-appointed singles/doubles with effective air-con. The hotel has a good vegetarian restaurant.

Then I ventured out and went to a local tour operator that helped me in chalking out my tour in Kanchipuram. I took a guide,Bali, and and an AC car from the tour operator. Next day, we, my guide and I went out for excursion. I covered the various pilgrimage destination in Chennai.

The first one that I thronged to was the Sri Ekambarnathar Temple, dedicated to Siva. Bali, my guide, informed me that it is one of the largest temples in Kanchipuram and covers nine hectares of the land. He said, " Miki, it has 59 m high gopuram and this massive outer stone wall was constructed in 1509" as he showed me the well he continued providing other facts about the temple.

Then I visited the Kamaskhi Amman Temple, dedicated to the goddess Paravati, Bali told me that it an important temple is the site of the annual Car Festival, held on the 9th lunar day in February -March.

I did a great research on Kanchipuram sarees, and today I can even write a thesis upon it. The weavers at Kanchipuram specialises in heavy silk sarees woven with tightly twisted three-ply, high-denier threads using thick zari threads for supplementary warp-and-weft patterning. Keeping pace with the demands of the market. South Indian woman use Kanchipuram Sarees mostly as their traditional wedding saree.

I noticed an intresting fact that most of the Kanchipuram Sarees used traditional motifs such as, mango, elephant, peacock, diamond, lotus, pot, creeper, flower, parrot, hen, and depiction of stories from mythology. Cotton sarees are ornamented with threads and some silk sarees are also woven with thread instead of pure zari.
