The second temple that I explored during my voyage was Kamakshi Amman Temple of Kanchipuram. Being an avid explorer, I used to jot down every important point that Murlidharan used to tell me about any interesting tourist spot. "Kamakshi Amman temple at Kanchipuram is an ancient one and is associated with Aadi Sankaracharya of the 1st millennium CE. " said Murlidharan. He also acquainted me with the fact that this is one of the three holy places of Sakthi worship in India. The other two were in Madurai and Chennai. Devoted to Parvati, goddess with the eyes of love, who playfully blindfolded her consort Shiva and had to do pay the penance for her mischievousness. Parvati was eventually forgiven by him at the spot where the temple rose. This was an interesting fact to note about Kamakshi Amman Temple and I didn't wasted any time and jotted down immediately. Spanning over an area of 5 acres, the temple sanctum is crowned with a gold plated vimanam. As we entered the temple, many Pandits in yellow dress ( Priest) surrounded us to tell us the history and to help us in performing the Puja. Thanks to Murlidharan, he eluded all and even asked them to stay away from us. He then told me that one has to be really cautious with these Pandits as some of them are merely touts and are there for merely extracting money. Kamakshi, the goddess, is enshrined in a seated posture in the sanctum - and is referred to as the Parabhrama Swarupini, seated with Bhrama Vishnu Rudra Eswara and Sadasiva. A Sri Chakram has been installed in front of the image and worship is offered to it. |
