Another sanctuary that I explored during my wildlife tour was Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary. Spreading over an area of about 17.26-sq-kms, Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary is surrounded by sea and shore and comprises of forests tidal swamps, dry evergreen forests of mangroves. Also known as "Kodikkarai", the sanctuary is 90-km southeast of Thanjavur in a wetland which juts out into the Palk Strait separating India and Sri Lanka. It is noted for the vast flocks of migratory waterfowl, especially flamingos, which congregate here every winter.

I was quiet impressed to note that the Point Calimere sanctuary is blessed with varied wild life such as Chital, Wild boar, Bonnet macaque, Black Buck, Flamingos, Teals, Gulls, Terns, Plavers and Stilts. Some of the major attractions that I liked during my tour are close encounters with Dolphins and Turtles, that are often close to the shore. " Sir, the best time to visit this sanctuary is during November and January."

Since I was completely mesmerized by the exotic nature of the sanctuary, my guide recommended me to stay in Forest Department Rest House that had adequate rooms at Point Calimere. But I declined since I was mentally and physically recharged to explore more of Tamil Nadu.

Murlidharan informed me, if in case any of my friends ever visited this place and have a mind to stay than he must make reservations at the rest house with the Forest Officer in Thanjavur. This was one thing that I loved in Murlidharan, he used to tell every minutest details possible.

While exploring, I snapped many photographs of Koels, Mynas and Barbets, Chital, Wild boar, Bonnet macaque, Black Buck, Flamingos. My excursion to Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary added a new glitz to my foray.
