Our is a robotic country, some where down the line it has lost its traditional touch. The villages in our country have become more mechanized and at times they leave many modern cities far behind. Since my father was born in India, ( but now he is settled in New Jersey ), he told me that a visit to Indian village will help me to understand the exotic state better. No doubt, my voyage to a small village near Shekhawati cleared my automated thoughts about villages. Explore the village! During my desert safari, we crossed many small and big villages. We will take a halt in this village said the incharge of the Safari. It was a small village and consisted of huts that were circular with thatched roofs. As we all settled down I decided to explore that small village I got acquainted with the head of the village who was somewhat able to speak English. The decoration! Why most of the walls are yellow here? I asked the head. He replied that the walls are covered with the plaster of clay, cow dung and hay- making. This form a termite resistant antiseptic layer on the wall. He told me mostly the huts in the villages are Kuchha, temporary structure, and are built in an eco-friendly form. In fact, I found them well built decorated with beautiful decoration and wall painting. Intrestingly, despite the challenges that desert environment offers, people have settled over Thar. Apart from its outer beauty, I was overwhelmed by the hosptality of the people. They respected us and were really nice to us. The wind swept, san farms have few trees. And the few that grows provide sheltor from the scorching heat of the sun. |
