I was quiet fortunate to attend the famous Pushkar festival as it enabled me to become quite familiar with Pushkar itself. As I had time, I ventured out in Pushkar to explore its various dimensions. The picturesque Pushkar is set in a valley just about 14 kilometers off Ajmer in the north Indian state of Rajasthan. Surrounded by hills on three sides and sand dunes on the fourth, Pushkar forms a fascinating location and a befitting backdrop for the annual religious and cattle fair. Exploring Pushkar! My guide, Ranvir showed me the most sacred lakes among the Hindus. He also told me about the popular belief related to the lake "It is said that if you take a dip in the lake during Kartik Purnima or the full moon day of the Kartik month, and worship at the Brahma temple cleanses the soul and ensures salvation" as Ranvir enlighten me with his knowledge. The famed waters of the Pushkar Lake are said to wash away the sins of a lifetime. " This place is quite special in another way" said Ranvir. " How come? " I asked inquisitively. It holds the only Brahma temple in Pushkar. This is the only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma or the creator of the universe according to Hindu mythology in the entire country. Ranvir took me to the Savitri temple that is located on the top of the Ratnagiri hill. |
