Rourkela was totally a surprise package for me. To be frank, I was not very impressed by its name and I never thought that the place will be scenic. Yes! to an extent I was right but then not totally. The city has a famous steel plant and is situated at the richest deposit of mineral wealth. The city became famous in 1955, with the establishment of Rourkela Steel plant. The steel city of Orissa is basically segregated into two : Old Rourkela and the New steel township. The major places that I explored on my tour to Rourkela were Vedavyas, Junagarh, Ushakothi and Mandira Dam. Mandira Dam. Mandira Dam was constructed on the river Sankha and supplies water to Rourkela. Mandira Dam is ideal sight for picturesque holidays. You can get the permission to enter the Dam Site by the officer in charge Ghoghar was another scenic destination that I explored on my tour to Rourkela. It is one of the popular picnic spot and is formed by Shiv Lingam of black granite. The city was built around a large iron and steel plant. Other products are heavy machinery, fertilizers, and chemicals. Though the city may not be culturally rooted, Rourkela forms an enticing destination of Orissa to explore. Come to Rourkela in order to explore its bounteous beauty. |
