This was an interesting circuit that I covered on my tour to Orissa. The three cities comprised off - Lalitgiri, Udaygiri and Ratnagiri. All three forms are major Buddhist pilgrimage sites around Cuttuck. All of these three destinations are quite famous and attracts tourists. I was no exception - I was merely attracted by name of these three tourists spots. The first one in the series that I explored was the Lalitgiri. In Lalitgiri, you will find the relics of Buddha. I came to know that during one excavation, a series of brick pagodas, stone porches, prayer halls and Buddhist images were found. Udaygiri caves is of no less in fame. Udaygiri caves carry a peculiar characteristics that come from Gupta period. The caves are beautifully ornated with sculptures. The caves are numbered and the most visited is the number 9 cave. The cave is known for its large cella and massive, 8 feet high pillars, its long portico and pillared hall. Another cave which is most sought is Cave number 5 . The caves are beautiful and beholds the sheer magnificence of the vision of its builders. Ratnagiri was another Buddhist centre that I explored on my tour to Cuttuck. Though a part of Cuttuck, these three are taken as a separate entity. Lying on the Birupa river Valley, Rantnagiri boast two large monasteries. These monasteries were taken out of excavation. The monasteries belonged to the Gupta period and dated back to 6 th century. Exploring these sites were dream sequence as they successfully recalls the past and blend it with today. The intricate sculptures and exquisite craftsmanship makes these sites worth visiting. |
