The few caves that I explored
during my foray to Maharashtra were Ellora caves, Ajanta Caves and
Elephanta caves. Being one of the UNESCO heritage site, these caves
genuinely came first on my list. The caves are located in Aurangabad and one need to pay an entrance fees in order The one I clearly remember are Ajanta Caves. I think it was 10 AM in the morning, when I reached the cave. There were many tourists from all parts of the world. With hi-tech cameras, they were capturing the beauty of these caves. A local guide told me that these caves were one of the first Buddhist caves dating back to Gupta period. There are around the 29 caves at Ajanta which makes the place a lot more enticing. Close to Ajanta is another fascinating site - Ellora. These caves are 34 Km away from the Aurangabad and hence forms another tourist destinaton in Maharastra. Believe me ! these caves were as beautiful as Ajanta. But here the number of caves were 34 and it gave me more chance to explore. The most notable points were that the 12 caves to the south are Buddhist, the 17 in the centre dedicated to Hinduism, and the 5 caves to the north are Jain. Apart from these two, I also explored Elephanta and Kanheri caves that were equally spectacular. Each of these caves depicted the time of the bygone era which made these sites a lot more enticing |
