Omkareshwar was amongst the last travel destination in Madhya Pradesh that we explored on our tour. Travelling to this revered destination was not at all a problem since it is a well connected place and is linked by all modes of transport. The nearest airport is Indore (77 km), connected by regular flights with Delhi, Mumbai, Bhopal and Gwolior. Nearest railhead is Omkareshwar Road (12 km) on the Ratlam-khandwa section of the Western Railway. Omkareshwar is connected to Indore, Ujjain, Khandwa and Omkareshwar Road by regular bus services. Being the sacred island, shaped like the holiest of all Hindu symbols, 'Om' has drawn hundreds of generations of pilgrims. The interesting thing that we noted was in Omakareshwar the two sacred rivers of narmada and Kaveri joins and devotees gather to kneel before the jyotirlinga (one of the twelve throughout India) at the temple of Shri Omkar Mandhata. And here, as in so many of Madhya Pradesh's sacred shrines, the works of Nature complement those of man to provide a setting aweinspiring in its magnificence. We explored the famous tourist spots of Omakareshwar that included Shri Omkar Mandhata ,Siddnath Temple ,Satmatrika Temples ,Kajal Rani Cave. All of them were quite unique and were good to capture on my camera. I still remember that the major temple of Shri Omakar Mandhta stands on a one mile long. Half mile wide island formed by the fork of the Narmada. The soft stone of which it was constructed has lent its pliable surface to a rare degree of detailed work, of which the frieze figures on the upper portion is the most strking. Also intricately carved is the stone roof of the temple. Encircling the shrine are verandahs with columns which are carved in circles, polygons and squares. " Honey! I think I will never forget this tour of mine" said Rinnee my newly wed wife. I brought her to Madhya Pradesh so that we can spend our honeymoon amidst the most remarkable site - Khajuraho temple. Excursion to other places was a secret that I unfurled as soon as we landed on the abode. Interestingly, we stored some golden moments in this place that still cherish |
