Forts and Palaces
Modestly , we were amazed by the beauty of the forts and palaces of Madhya Pradesh dotting the landscape. Exploring one forced us to explore the next one.

As we explored almost all the cities of Madhya Pradesh, we were able to capture some of the enchanting monuments of Madhya Pradesh. As an important state, Madhya Pradesh forms an indispensable part of Indian heritage. Significantly, it boast many forts and palaces that makes it an abode worth visiting.

Forts like Gwalior Fort, Datia Fort, Deogarh or Fort of the Gods and Chanderi Fort are some of the major edifices that beautifies the landscape of Madhya Pradesh. All were enchanting and had an incredible legacy to boast off but out of all, Rinnee, my newly wed wife loved Gwalior Fort. We actually had to take a help of a local guide in Gwalior Fort that could tell us about its history. The guide, Pappu, told us that the fort was established in 8th century A.D and was named after Saint Gwalipa, a hermit who had cured Suraj Sen, the king of Gwalior, of leprosy, by offering him water from the Suraj Kund or the Sun Tank located within the Gwalior fort.

Though Pappu was a good guy but he didn't had that much of information about the place. And this was strange, since most of the guide we took on our tour provided us with the adequate information but we found Pappu quite reluctant in that case.

Apart from forts, we covered certain palaces on our Madhya Pradesh tour that included Usha Kiran Palace and Sheesh Mahal. Usha Kiran Palace was amongst the greatest of all. As far history of the palace is concerned, we had to take the help of a travel magazine in order to understand its significance. According to the information in the magazine, the palace was constructed by Maharaja Jiwaji Rao Scindia, for his European friends and visitors. Set amidst 9 acres of beautifully landscaped lawns, this regal palace is outfitted with artistic stone carvings and delicate filigree work. Significantly, the palace has been converted into a heritage hotel and is now under one of the famous hotel chains.

Other palace was the Sheesh Mahal in Orrcha. Built during the early 18th century, long after Orchha's demise, the Sheesh Mahal or the Palace of Mirrors was originally intended as an exclusive country retreat for the local Raja, Udait Singh. Frankly, it was totally a retreat for us to explore some of the great monuments of Madhya Pradesh.
