I have some memorable experiences while exploring the temples of Kohlapur- the Varanasi of South.

I consider myself amongst the lucky few who covered almost every nook and corner of the Maharastra state. In fact, I covered almost every city, that was around Mumbai or Bombay as you can say. This is the place of art and drama. Michalle told me that this place is popular for its Marathi film Industry, in fact it forms a base for many upcoming Marathi actors.

Kohlapur is 450 kms from Mumbai and is a well linked place. The nearest airport is Ujailwadi airport that is 10 kms from Kohlapur. But I traveled to Kohlapur in rail and it took approx 11 hours to reach the destination. Kohlapur is on the national highway of Prune and Bangalore.

Michalle informed me that in 1945, archaeological excavations near a hill in Kolhapur unveiled the ruins of an ancient town that had harmonious commercial & cultural affairs with the Roman Empire. Hinduism is the major religion in Kolhapur and Marathi is the mother tongue of the Kolhapuri people. This milk-rich place with its balanced weather has been conducive for bodybuilding and has produced many "Pehelwans" (wrestlers).

Here the city boost many exotic tourist spots that included Mahalaxmi temple, the town hall museum, Ranakala lake and many others. I mean that the place is not short of tourist destination.

Michalle told me that Kohlapur is called the Varanasi of South. “but why?” I asked. To this she added my information that the city boost many enthralling temples. She took me to the famous Mahalaxmi temple of Kohlapur. The temple has an exquisite architecture and is worth seeing. It is amongst the best known temples in Kohlapur as well as in India.

The other places that I explored in Kohlapur are Shalini Palace, Shankracharya Math, Tembalai Devi temple, Ranakala lake.
