Khajuraho
Being a westerner I had been so much aloof from the Indian idea of sublimity, which is so beautifully etched in the temples of Khajuraho, our honeymoon destination.
This travelog is written by Peterson who visited Khajuraho, in last week of Feburary 2003.

My Honeymoon!
Today I am pleased that We, My wife and I, spent my honeymoon in arena that is full of love. The pleasant atmosphere and the erotic sculpture arose an innate passion in me. As my guide told me that these temples were built at time when Candellas ruled the country. I was astonished to know that the temples were built in 11th -12th centuary . Now out of 85 temples only 22 temples are left. And significantly they all were well kept and regained their magnificence.

Well I was mesmerized by their gestures and expression that pulsated life and exhibited great passion, sensitivity and warmth. The love that these sculptures hold are something to be felt .

The Art of Khajuraho !!
The existing temples of Khajuraho can be divided into three groups, Western, Eastern and Southern. I was surprised to know that the Western group of the temples are designated under World Heritage Site. The temples represent an outstanding unification of advanced architecture and exotic sculpture, and their beauty. Well today I can say that I took a right decision by including it in my North India Itinerary.

And how can I forget to mention the internationally acclaimed Khajuraho Dance Festival. Since our visit coincided with the festival, My wife, Julie, was enthralled by the dance performances given by the world renowned legends.

The Hsitory Unfurls
Why the builders chose Khajuraho, a small village, as the site for this great complex? This question was constantly hovering in my mind. Ultimately it was Raju, who had all the answers to satisfy our curiosity. This great architectural wonder was created by the Chandela Rajput kings of Central India. Raju narrated a very mysterious story related to the founder of Chandela Dynasty.

The fascinating story revealed that there was a beautiful daughter of a Brahmin priest, Hemvati, One summer night, while she was bathing in the sparkling waters of a lotus-filled pond, the Moon god was so awestruck by her beauty that he descended to earth in human form and ravished her.

To make amends for his folly, the Moon god promised that she would become the mother of a valiant son. The child born out of this union was Chandravarman, founder of the Chandela dynasty. Brought up by his mother who sought refuge in the forests, Chandravarman, when established as a ruler, had a dream visitation of his mother. It is said that she implored him to build temples that would reveal human passions, and in doing so, bring about a realization of the emptiness of human desire. He fulfilled his mother's desire and built these magnificent temples. Though it was hard to believe, this was truly a very interesting story.
