Kumarakoram was amongst the first few cities that I explored during my stay in Kerala. Kumarakoram is a cluster of little islands on the Vembanand lakes. The place is well linked as the airport is just 85 kms from the city. Kumarakom the charming peninsula along the Vembanand Lake. It took me into the heart of the scenic lake where I came across plenty of traditional country crafts, boats and canoes. The fresh water of the lake runs into the mainland making a labyrinth of lagoons, brooks, canals and waterways. The backwater houses a variety of species of both fauna and flora. They are rich with marine life namely the exclusive 'Kumarakom Karimeen' (pearl spotted fish), Konju (tiger prawns), Njandu (crabs), Chemeen (prawns) and many more. Oh! what a gala time, I had while exploring the Kumarakoram. My guide told me that this place is famous for its boat races. These boat races are held mainly during the period of August and September. Oh! how endearing it was to actually sail across the backwaters of Kumarakoram. I spent some of the phenomenal time in Kumarakoram during my tenure in Kerala. |
