The Excitement!
Boat races is a unique event that infuses adventure at the backwater trail. Since I visited Kerala in the month of August , I was able participate in the celebration that is held almost every year- Nehru Trophy Boat Race. My local guide, Murli, told me that this boat race is held in the commemoration of Late Prime Minister Of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The Nehru trophy Boat Race is held in Punnamada backwaters of Alappuzha.

He also told me that boat races are considered as an example of the communal harmony irrespective of casts, creed and classes, all the people can participate in boat race.

Racing Ahead !!
Murli told me about one more boat race held on Champakulum Lake- Champakulum Moolam Boat race. It is one of the oldest and most popular snake boat race in Kerala. He told me that this race is held in June - July.

“ Today I saw the exotic Nehru boat Race” I said on a telephonic conversation to Mathew, my NRI friend. “How was it? Found it interesting?” asked Mathew. “ Fabulous” I said.

A fiesta!!!
While conversating with my friend, he told me about another important race Aranmula Boat Race. He told me that the two day water fiesta is held during Onam. About 26 boat participate in the event which is marked by colorful water fiesta. This festivity is also held in the month of August. I missed the first day of the event, and on the second day I was with Mr Narayanan, Mathew's father. He elaborated me the entire event. He told me that generally the boat races are held to celebrate Onam, the harvest festival. The other boat races held in the month of August and September are Rajiv Gandhi Boat Race, Kumarakom boat race, Kotapuram boat race and many more.
