Kerala is blessed with breathtaking beautiful backwaters, beaches, canopies of coconut and the life giving sunshine. Though, I was informed that the increasing population of this region has put immense pressure on land and a greater reliance of farmers on fertilizers has eventually unbalanced the ecology of this region. While crossing through Alappuzha, I was aghast to see villagers using the dark oily water for all their household work. With an intention to know more about the ecological imbalance, I talked to few of the local villagers. I came to know that apart from increasing population, regular influx of industrial wastage in the backwaters, have increased the ecological problems, such as uncontrolled growth of African Moss. This often carpets the surface of the narrower waterways of Kerala, causing a menace to small craft traffic and underwater life. On top of that, the illegal land cultivation poses the single largest threat to the already fragile eco-system of Kerala. But most of them were hopeful, as the government was taking various steps to preserve the ecology of Kerala. |
