Jantar Mantar was also included in my sightseeing tour and some how the tour helped me to save my time and energy. Jantar Mantar is the most famous and elaborate observatory of its time. " Hey, will you please tell us about its history" I asked the guide. He then detailed that the monument was constructed in the year 1724 A.D. by Sawai Jai Singh II, even before the city of Jaipur was built, and has been described as the most surrealistic and logical landscape instone. He added that the monument was built to measure the local time, the sun's declination, altitude, the declination of stars, planets and to determine eclipses . oh! yes he also told that this observatory is the most famous and largest of the five observatories in India built by Sawai Jai Singh. Our guide elaborated about the history of Jantar Mantar and then he told us about the King. He said that Sawai Jai Singh had a passionate hobby in the field of Astronomy, numerology, in sighted him to execute this observatory and with the help of skilled labourers, they managed to create a collection of complex astronomical instruments chiselled out of stone and most of which continues to provide accurate information to this day. I especially liked the most striking instrument in the observatory Brihat Samrat yantra Sundial. It is an imposing yellow edifice to the far right of the observatory complex that has a 27m high gnomon arm set at an angle of 27 degree. |
