On Sunday morning, 18th March 2004, we, my friends and I started our ecursion to the Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain. Well, we were escorted by a team of attendents who told us Kanchenjunga was first climbed by the Chrales Evans in 1955. As we trekked the route we crossed rich farmland of the Limbu people. " Wow! What a long camp" as one of my friend reacted when they saw some Limbu people wearing very long camps as usual. How Romantic! Kanchenjunga is the most romantic mountain and it covers 7000 sq km that mainly faces part of Sikkim and Nepal. The attendents also told us that the world Kanchenjunga means the five treasures of the snow in the local dialect. We trek through richly cultivated hillsides, Rhododendron forests and yak pastures that lye below the glacier. The return route heading west passes through some delightful villages of Taplejung. The panoramic views of Everest, Makalu and Kanchenjunga are magnificent on our descent to the road head. The Woodland!! This voyage took us through scattered settlements of thatched farmhouses with colourful flower gardens, wild coniferous woodland and on to remote Buddhist settlements where people scratch a living from the barren land. The climax of this trek in both altitude and scenic splendor is undoubtely overwhelming |
