I happened to visit the Great Himalayan National Park, Himachal, with the help of Jung Bahadur, daughter Meeta. Meeta was the daughter of the person who used to export Kullu apples to me. She was doing her postgraduation in science and used to visit the Great Himalayan National Park, quite seldomly. Once she offered me the oppurtunity to visit the park with her and I jumped to it. O. K, so our visit to Great Himalayan National Park is final, she said Ya! I'll be ready by 10 am I said. Fortunately, the park was just 60 km from Kullu and took us approximately one hr to reach the park. While we were on our way to the park, Meeta told me some facts about the park. She told me that Himachal Pradesh has 32 sanctuaries and out of all Great Himalyan National park is the largest. The 765-sq-kms area has temperate forests - some of the virgin coniferous forests of the state. Vast areas of alpine pastures and glaciers cap this park. The park area is the largest protected area in the state of Himachal Pardesh. The Park consists of the upper catchment areas of the Tirthan, Sainj, Parvati and Jiwa Nala, flowing East to West and mingling into Beas river. The bewitching scenic beauty of the Park is a complement to its biological richness. She told me that the best season to visit the Great Himalayan National Park in summer is from April to June and autumn from September to November. |
