I knew that Himachal Pradesh is region at high altitude and endorses
many hill station. But, I was actually quite surprised to see the number
of Hill station in Himachal Pradesh. Dalhousie, Chamba, Dharamsala,
Manali, Shimla, Kasauli, Chail are few to name. The lush green
environment with freezy winds forced me to explore the vast dimensions
of Himachal hills.
The first one was apparently Kullu, why??? the reason was that I first
landed on this hill station for my apples deal. Due to its pleasing
environment, the region is quite favorable for growing apples and hence
it is quite famous for them.
The Kullu valley houses two main tourist destination Kullu and Manali.
Lulu is at 1,220m is the local district headquarters and the largest
settlement in the valley. The most charming and beautiful Lulu valley
spreads out its charm on either side of river Beas. The valley runs
north to south of this river and is 80kms. long and about 2kms. at its
broadest. Yet with awe inspiring glens and mossy meadows encircled by
the rushing streams and meandering brooks, flung east & west, a
fairly wide area is open to the tourists, the trekkers, the
mountaineers, the artists and to anyone who wishes to escape the heat &
dust of the plains to breathe the exhilarating air of the Himalaya and
enjoy the spectacle of the variegated mountain scenery. The valley is
also famous for its exquisitely woven colourful hand made shawls and
Kullu caps.
I also explored the cold environment of Shimla, the most important
British hill resort, prior to India's independence. Significantly, On my
visit, I came to know that it is named after its patron goddess, Shamla
Devi, a manifestation of Kali. Shimla, located at an altitude of 7,267
feet, is inhabited around a crescent - shaped ridge, which is blessed
with perennially cool air and amazing views. It provides superb
panoramic sights of the valleys, and the lofty peaks of the great
Himalayan range, on both sides. The local bazaars of Shimla are sprawled
over the southern slopes of the ridge. The main attractions of Shimla
include the Rashtrapati Niwas, formerly the residence of the British
Viceroy, the State Museum, which has a modest collection of stone
statues from different parts of Himachal Pradesh, Jakhu Temple,
dedicated to Lord Hanuman, Summer Hill, Chadwick Fall, Prospects Hill,
Sankat Mochan, Tara Devi and Windflower Hall. Kufri, a well - known ski
resort in Himachal Pradesh, is 16 kilometer from Shimla.
Other well known hill station that I delve into were Dalhousie, Samba,
Manali,Dharamshal and few more.
