Since India Gate was not included in the packaged tour offered to me by DTDC. ( Delhi Tourism Development Corporation), I thought of covering it on my own. I called my friend, Jai, and scheduled visiting the place through a cab. Being an employ of World famous organization, I could have easily used an Indian governement vehicle to commute from one place to another but I intentionally avoided the misuse of government facilities. On the way to India Gate, Jai told me that India gate is a memorial built in commemoration of 70,000 Indian soldier who were killed during World War I. Wow, what a monument? As I saw just a glimpse of it from a distance. As it was late evening India gate was illuminated with number of lights around it to give a magnificient appeal to it. As we, my friend and I strolled on the road, I came to know about some other facts. Jai revealed that this exotic monument was designed by Edwin Lutyens. The monument was dedicated to the nation after 10 years later by the viceroy, Lord Irwina. He told me that India gate was earlier named All India War Memorial. I especially liked the architecture of the monument as it stood on a low base. Another memorial at India Gate is the Amar Jawan Jyoti, that was added after independence. You mean its burning since 1971 I exclaimed, when I came to know that the flame burns 24 hrs under the arch. The flame was lightened in commemoration of soldier who died in Indo- Pakistan war of December 1971. I also visited the childrens park near India gate, that is great picnic spot and is crowded with youngsters in the evening. |
