To be modest, I was never very keen to know about the South Indian Film Industry. But I think that It was in my destiny to get acquainted with some of the facts about the industry. It was a mere chance that on my voyage to Chennai, I came to know a person, Laxman, who was a pure movie buff. He always used to talk about movies as at one point of time he wanted to become a South Indian film star He told me that when cinema appeared in South India, it created a space for itself in which all castes could come to gather, purchase a ticket and watch a common entertainment. That had never happened before. This was fundamentally knew to the south Indian people. He told me that it was Mr Edward who screened the first ever movie show at South India at Victoria Public hall in the year 1897. He also told me that India's first International film festival was celebrated in Chennai in the year 1952. You know! I was amongst the first few candidates to actually enroll myself in the Madras Film Society, when it was formed in 1956 said Laxman. I I kept on looking his face. In fact, just like US, films play a major role in India. People dress, act just the way their favorite actor or actresses do. Some of the popular South Indian Film Stars are Rajnikanth, Cheeranjivi, Sridevi, Jaya Prada and many more. |
