I had reserved one full day (Sunday )for shopping, although wherever I went I shopped very little keeping in mind my pocket and off course the baggage that I had to carry. I was quite impressed to see that things were sold at a far cheaper rates than other major cities of India. At least I found the city cheap for buying silk fabrics, handloom fabrics, garments, woolen carpets, sandalwood articles, rare antiques, gold and silver jewelry, perfumes, and incense sticks. From my resort, I took an auto-rickshaw and got down at Mahatma Gandhi Road. At MG Road, I found a large number of sari stores. The Raymonds and Cotton World showrooms were also located here. There are many movie theaters in the area. Some of which come to my mind are:Plaza and Symphony, Galaxy, Blue Diamond and Blue moon. It was quite a happening place as most of the youngsters throng to this place to buy branded articles. Barton Court Commercial Complex, Public Utility Building Shopping Complex, Spencer Super Market, are the famous shopping malls. After spending two hours in MG Road and I went to the Brigade Road another shopping area in Bangalore. Brigade road is very next to M G Road. The place is a popular hangout for young people, because there is a lot of entertainment available, as well as a lot of shopping options. One can get everything here. There are some shops selling radios, TV sets, garments, electrical appliances. Tamil Nadu Handicrafts are available at Poompuhar Show Room. There is Rex that is supposed to be the best movie theater in town, bowling alley, a discotheque, a video game parlor. Branded clothes are quite rage in Indian market, I thought as I saw the showrooms like Lee, Van Heusen, and Louis Phillippe. Many of the clothes, radio, television sets, shoes and jewelry sold here are unbranded. There are malls like Fifth Avenue and Mota Royal Arcade, which are worth exploring. I also bumped into Music world fom where I bought variety of cassettes, audio CDs and CD-ROMs. They also have a number of listening booths. The staff is discreet and very helpful. In the evening I visited the commercial Street exclusively for shopping. The area is lined up with shops selling hosiery items, textiles, woolen materials, garments, novelties, jewelry, travel kits, sports and general goods. Kashmir Arts 'Emporium and other arts and crafts shops are situated here. I didn't find entertainment outlets here as I did on Brigade Road. The side streets are definitely worth exploring. Clothes and jewelry here tend to be inexpensive, especially if they are unbranded. The clothes arent of particularly high quality, but if one is good at bargaining one can have better deals and value for money. Oh yes! I also tried the Coffee in the Coffee Day, a coffee house, where one can have different kinds of coffee, sandwiches, pizzas and pies. Naturals is heaven on earth for ice-cream lovers. For Rs.22, you can feast on the most delicious and exotic flavors imaginable. The Cake shop of the Taj, with its pastries, cakes and patties, is located right next to Naturals. By the time, I explored commercial street, I began to feel the weight of things purchased and also got worried about the amount of money spent. So, then I decided to make a retreat to the hotel. There are many other places in Bangalore where one can loosen the burden of his wallet. |
